Betty and Coretta, by EMMY® nominated actress, Kelly Jenrette, is more than a production—it’s a movement. In a world where the stories of influential Black women are often sidelined, Black Rebirth Collective (BRC) and Support Black Theatre (SBT) are bringing Betty Shabazz and Coretta Scott King to the forefront, exploring the sisterhood, resilience, and vision of these two extraordinary women. Together, with your support, we will celebrate their legacy and inspire a new generation of Black women leaders.

BRC and SBT are bringing an evocative, world premiere production that imagines an intimate, fictional meeting between Betty Shabazz and Coretta Scott King. While both are often viewed in the light of their late husbands, this work brings their own voices to the forefront, delving deeply into their individual lives, aspirations, and identities as Black women navigating a world of social upheaval and personal resilience. This play, by highlighting their powerful stories as more than “the wives of,” reframes them as full protagonists in their own right, offering an intimate, humanized portrayal of two remarkable women in history.

Drawing upon historical accounts, letters, and cultural memory, Kelly's script creatively explores their imagined perspectives on motherhood, activism, faith, and the complexities of their lives. This is not a history lesson but a re-imagining of what might have unfolded if these two formidable women had a chance to sit down together—shedding light on the unspoken fears, moments of joy, and resilience that defined their journeys. Both Betty and Coretta stood at the forefront of monumental social movements while carrying the weight of immense personal loss. This production will explore their unique approaches to social justice, love, and the often-overlooked labor of leadership and activism carried out by Black women.

We aim to highlight the intersection of advocacy, leadership, and the arts by spotlighting the stories of these two women. This production will focus not only on their activism but also on their unique connection and the sacrifices they made for their communities and families.
